Getting a Hair Transplant in Thailand - The Good and the Bad

It is commonly knowledge that many people travel to Thailand to been seen for plastic surgery and for hair transplant procedures. They are known for providing the very best in medical care so they are leading the industry in these areas. However, there are some good and bad issues to be aware of before you head off to Thailand.

Since Thailand offers such amazing health care services, they offer surgeons who have trained in Europe or North America. They are certified in specialty areas including hair transplants. Many of them belong to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons. They offer the same types of hair transplant procedures as the United States. You can choose from FUE, micro or mini transplants, FUT, or a combination to get the best results. Thailand surgeons do take on other procedures that many United States surgeons don't including beard transplants and body hair construction.

Thailand Travel

The process of scheduling a hair transplant in Thailand is very simple. You can fill out the paperwork and then soon be scheduled for the surgery. You won't have to wait for weeks or months as you do in North America. Probably the most common reason individuals choose to have their hair transplant done in Thailand is the difference in the cost. Almost all insurance companies refuse to cover such procedures so the individual has to pay it on their own.

Getting a Hair Transplant in Thailand - The Good and the Bad

The cost in the United States ranges from ,500 up to ,000 depending on the procedure and the number of grafts to complete. If you chose to do it in Thailand, you can cover the surgery, your travel including hotel and still be saving a considerable amount of money. Many people choose to schedule a vacation in Thailand prior to the hair transplant as an added bonus.

The largest drawback to getting a hair transplant [http://www.medicalhairtransplantation.org/hairtransplant/FUE_vs_strip_grafting.html] in Thailand is the distance you are from the surgeon should you experience any complications. It will be hard to schedule another trip so soon to see them if you need to. Most people are willing to take that chance though because hair transplants and cosmetic surgeries are safe, easy, and cost less than in the United States. If you decide to do this, make sure you take the time to do a reference check on the surgeon, get any questions you have answered before you schedule the procedure, and talk to others who have used that same surgeon. Try to schedule some vacation time in Thailand as well!

Essential Tips to Buying a Home in Thailand Part 2

The best lesson I learned about buying a home in Thailand is that it really pays big time to think through exactly what you're doing before you go do it. This may sound common sense, but believe me, it's easy to get big headed about spending a lot of money in Thailand - especially when you have a substantial income from a western country!

It's easy to get ambitious when your dollar is worth many times the Thai baht! Overnight you're a millionaire (in Thailand at least), and you can build a huge home with no expenses spared, using all the best materials money can buy. But wait a second - before you go do it, here's a few things to keep in mind...

Thailand Travel

The first thing is that you should be careful about over-spending, and keep to some sort of budget. Sometimes materials and prices of things (builders, carpenters, wall tiles, cement and furnishings for example) can fluctuate wildly. One day you're paying 0 for those beautiful doors, and tomorrow you're charged 0 for the same thing. Ouch. You ordered, they delivered.

Essential Tips to Buying a Home in Thailand Part 2

The other thing that can catch you out is falling into the trap of impressing everyone around you with your wealth, and beautiful new home. Sometimes it's better to stick to the budget, and just build your home to lockup stage - and do the interior essentials (like painting and furniture buying, and that essential hot tub) down the track a little, or at a later date.

Ultimately it's better to get the home completed (albeit in a simple style), so at least you can move in and start living the great Thai life, rather than stressing out over building and material costs because you blew out your budget. The point is to crunch your numbers carefully. Don't be tempted by the emotional 'got to have the best home in the street' side of things and you'll do well with your new Thai home!

Temple Boys Of Thailand

In the country-side of Thailand one will find many boys working in the temples as temple boys. These boys help monks in their alms collecting as they go from village to village. A temple has the responsibility of the monks alms bowl and food career. The temple boy accompanies the monk when they are their daily rounds of alms collection.

If a temple has many monks and novices, then the alms collection is normally divided into several routes. On certain routes only one temple boys assists the monks while on others there can be two or more. This usually depends on the quantity and amount of food offered by lay people.

Thailand Travel

On return to the temple, temple boys prepares food for the monks and novices. As a religious rule, monks are not allowed to eat food unless it is presented by a lay person. This excludes water and liquids. After the monks finish eating, temple boys will keep some food the monks for their second meal which must take place before midday. However, if some monks for the Buddhist precepts strictly, they will eat only one meal a day. The leftovers are eaten by the temple boys as it is considered a sin for lay people to eat before monks and novices. After midday, the only food consumed by monks and novices is liquid like water or pasteurized milk.

Temple Boys Of Thailand

A temple boy undertakes work of a housemaid in a temple. The only difference is that the temple boy is not paid for the work. A temple boy gets free food, accommodation and merit in exchange for work. Mostly poor farmer families send their boys to the temple to live temple boys. It is their way of ensuring that their sons gets free food and accommodation. However, there have been cases when boys from affluent families live in temple compounds.

Life of temple boy in a village can be difficult when the farmers in the village are poor. As a result the food offered to monks would be extremely limited and it is quite common for little food to be left over for the temple boys after monks and novices finish eating.

How Safe is Phuket For Travel?

Phuket is one of Thailand's most popular tourist destinations, and yet visitor numbers are well down on previous year. The beaches and streets in Phuket are quiet and businesses are beginning to feel the strain. Thailand's political problems have been well documented by the media, so much so that the country is portrayed as being in complete anarchy. Although the problems have been centered in Bangkok, they have impacted Phuket. But what's the reality of the situation? Should tourists be wary of traveling to Phuket?

The short answer is "no". For a bit of perspective, Thailand has had numerous problems over the years, from coups to bombings. However, it was only the tsunami that really affected tourism in the long run. Thailand's internal problems usually create a few short-term ripples and the media writes of chaos in the streets, but for people living in Thailand, they will tell you that life goes on as usual.

Thailand Travel

In Phuket, tourism is way down. Hotels are nowhere near full and people on the island are saying that the effect on the industry will be worse in the long term than the tsunami. It's such a dire situation, but it's also completely unnecessary. Travel advisory warnings also don't help.

How Safe is Phuket For Travel?

If you were to visit Phuket right now you'd see a peaceful island. There are no more dangers than normal and everything is safe. There's no fighting in the streets and tourists aren't being victimized or attacked. In fact, there's probably never been a better time to visit Phuket because the island is less crowded than usual.

The beaches are still there and the popular sites are waiting for visitors to trickle in. Of course, travelers should still exercise the same caution they would when visiting Phuket any time of the year. Traveling alone on a motorcycle at night isn't a good idea and care should be taken when out and about. But don't let the news reports put you off a trip to Phuket.

It's a sad state of affairs, but hotel-booking websites have been reporting a huge decline in bookings. The same is true of airlines, who are now throwing out offers left, right and center to entice people to visit Thailand. There are bargains to be snapped up at the moment.

So if Phuket is safe for tourists, then what about Bangkok, where most of the trouble has been? There have been protests and airport closures and all sorts. However, unless you had a plane to catch during that time, if you were in Bangkok, you wouldn't have noticed much out of the ordinary other than when you turned on the news. Everything carried on as usual. It always does.

After the most recent coup, the tanks and soldiers became a tourist attraction. The resultant protests were mostly jovial affairs with picnics and concerts. Some media reports were speculating that Thailand was about to become a bloodbath, similar to revolutions of the past, but such events didn't materialize.

Forums, blogs and phone lines have been inundated with people asking if Phuket is still safe for travel. It is safe, and it likely will be for a long time to come.

Travel Costs by Country

The following is a guide to what you can expect to spend per day, on a frugal budget, in various and popular destinations around the world. This cost is really a bare minimum and would ideally cover staying in cheaper hostels or hotels, food (eating locally bought produce, avoiding tourist restaurants where possible) and transport. There are a bunch of sites on the net with various strategies for travelling even cheaper than this list; though this type of journey takes travel out of the backpacking category into something more grubby. Living of .00 a day can be done but is not for everybody.

The costs listed are for low or shoulder seasons; if you plan to be in any of these places around Christmas or during a major event (Carnival in Rio for example) expect these prices to double or even triple.

Thai Marriage - Visa Application Inside Thailand

Ordinary expats in Thailand wishing to extend their stay in the kingdom may find it difficult fitting themselves in the various Thai visas offered by the Thai government. However, those who are married to Thai locals have got little to worry about.

Marriage Visa in Thailand

Thailand Travel

Immigration privileges are among the countless benefits of being married to a Thai.

Thai Marriage - Visa Application Inside Thailand

A foreign spouse of a Thai national is entitled to apply for a Thai marriage visa aka Non Immigrant Category O visa. This particular Thai visa can be applied for immediately after marriage, subsequently allowing the foreign spouse a renewable yearly stay in Thailand. Fortunately, the process for the Thai Marriage Visa application is rather straightforward and the requirements are quite minimal.

The most important requirements when applying for a marriage visa to Thailand are;

you are married to a Thai national you or your Thai spouse is financially capable of supporting your stay in Thailand. To prove your on-going marital relationship with your Thai spouse, you have to show the original copy of your marriage certificate and have your Thai spouse accompany you when submitting the visa application as the visa officer will be interviewing her about your marriage.

This is especially required when doing the visa application inside Thailand. On a positive note, medical certificate and police record are no more required when Thai Marriage Visa application is done in Thailand.

Financial Requirements

As far as the financial requirements for marriage visa in Thailand are concerned, there are two ways to meet them. One is to open a bank account, deposit 400,000 Baht into it and then wait for at least two months prior to making the Thai marriage visa application. The 2nd option is to show a proof of 40,000 Baht monthly /pension income. To do this, you need to obtain a pension/ employment letter stating your job or source of your pension and monthly income. This you bring to your embassy in Thailand for verification. Your embassy in turn will provide you an affidavit of income which you use for the visa application. In addition to this document, you may be required of your income tax and latest bank statements by the Visa officer. In case you don't qualify for the income requirement but your Thai spouse is, she can just as well handle the financial requirements. She just needs to present employment letter and income tax if she's employed and business registration certificate, balance sheet and business tax if she's self-employed.

Application Process

The actual application procedure is simple. An applicant who has 21 days left in his/her current visa can apply a 90 day visa initially then have this visa converted into One year Marriage visa before it expires. Those who have non immigrant Thai visa can proceed to visa conversion directly as soon as their visa is due to its expiration. You and your Thai spouse can go to the nearest Thai immigration with your documents to proceed with the visa application. Those who are not qualified to do the Marriage visa application in Thailand because of their invalid current visas can go to bordering countries to secure new entry visas and then apply marriage visa in Thailand as appropriate.

Summary

Obtaining the Thai marriage visa can be accomplished by following the guidelines outlined above.

Top Ten Holiday Destinations For 2009

Recession? Resmession! Despite the financial pinch, the public are still keen to go on holiday. Indeed, trips away are one of the last 'non-essential' expenses that consumers will axe when cutting back on their spending. And rightly so - it's important to get away and unwind once in a while. Possibly even more when times are tough.

But where to go? With the Pound faring poorly against the Euro, trips to the Eurozone are less than ideal from an economic point of view. So holidaymakers are increasingly going to mid and long-haul destinations. With this in mind, here are our top ten holiday tips for 2009:

Thailand Travel

1. Turkey

Top Ten Holiday Destinations For 2009

A typically sunny day at Ephesus, Turkey. Turkey was a notable beneficiary of travellers looking a little further afield in 2008, and should do well with British tourists this year too. Why? Well, it's not only because the Pound will have legs there. It's a top spot for culture vultures, due to its rich history and sites of archaeological interest - including Ephesus, Pergamon and Troy.

And on the days when you don't fancy looking at magnificent old historical structures, there are beaches a-plenty, and great spots for diving. Plus it's nice and hot. Lots of boxes ticked there.

2. Iceland

Iceland has been a particularly expensive destination traditionally. However, its economic plunge in the second half of last year now means that the cost of living is entirely reasonable... Which is great news for bargain hunters.

Iceland is the perfect spot for adventure sport enthusiasts, with plenty of opportunities to go kayaking, cycling, and zipping around on glaciers on a snow-mobile. And if you're not thrilled at the prospect of releasing lots of adrenaline, there's plenty of other stuff to do - including watching geysers, fishing, spotting whales, and lazing around in geothermal pools.

Note that although your EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) will only cover you for urgent medical treatment here - but not repatriation, ongoing treatment or anything less than a medical emergency. As such, comprehensive travel insurance shouldn't be overlooked.

3. Lithuania

This year could well be a good one for Lithuanian tourism. Firstly, this is the millennial anniversary of its name. And secondly, the capital Vilnius is the European Capital of Culture for 2009. The country offers national parks, spa towns, a selection of UNESCO heritage sites such as the Old Town in Vilnius - its historical centre, hearty food, and a bronze statue of Frank Zappa. What more could you possibly want?

4. USA

The Manhattan Bridge, New York, USA. Although the Pound isn't as strong against the Dollar as it has been, the US is still likely to be a popular destination for Brits abroad in 2009. Why? Well, the election of Barack Obama has brought about a lot of good feeling regarding the US. But that's not all. One of the alluring factors of the States is that there's just so much to see and do. It gets a lot of repeat visitors because it's virtually impossible to do everything you'd want to do in just one trip. And as extra incentive, this year marks the 400th anniversary of the discovery of New York - a city which is already a firm favourite.

If you're heading off to the States, please bear in mind that it is now compulsory to fill in an online ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) form before doing so. For more information, read our article 'Going to the USA? Then Don't Forget ESTA '.

5. South Africa

South Africa is becoming increasingly popular among British holidaymakers. Sterling is faring well against the Rand at the moment, so visitors are likely to get more pow! for their Pound. Which is just as well, because the food is well worth wiring into. Plus rugby fans may well be keen to catch some of The British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa this summer, between the 30th of May and the 4th of July.

A few pointers, though. Medical treatment can be very expensive in South Africa, so going there with anything less than a comprehensive travel insurance policy isn't advised. Also it's well known that there is a lot of crime in South Africa - although this predominantly occurs in the townships, rather than tourist areas. Still, it's an idea to have cover for all eventualities. To find out the latest travel information and advice, go to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office's South Africa page.

6. Egypt

Bargain hunters could do a lot worse than heading towards Egypt. There are countless iconic sights for visitors to experience first hand: the pyramids and Sphinx at Giza, the Valley of the Kings near Luxor, the Temple of Ramses III, the Aswan Dam... We could go on.

Beach lovers are spoilt with a selection of Red Sea resorts. And Egypt's not just exclusive to culture vultures... For those who are up for some Club 18-30 shenanigans, Sharm el Sheikh will be beginning just such a programme this year.

Be sure to read up on the customs before you go however, as what may count as acceptable in the UK may not necessarily be so here. In particular, it's important to dress modestly - especially when visiting traditional spots.

7. Mexico

For lovely beaches, great food and atmosphere, a trip to Mexico is difficult to top. There is an excellent range of all-inclusive deals available, and a trip to this gateway to central America is widely considered to be great value. There will be a number of resorts on the beautiful new Riviera opening this year. And there are now more flights available, as Mexicana airlines launched a new service in January linking Gatwick and Mexico City twice a week.

If saline activity is your thing, then Banderas Bay has a wide range of water activities available - including diving, sailing and even deep sea fishing. There are plenty of fascinating landmarks to see, such as Meso-American ruins, pyramids... And then of course there's the wonderful cuisine and the tequila!

Do bear in mind that English is not as widely spoken outside the major cities as one might expect. So - if you're planning on having a bit of a wander - be sure to at least familiarise yourself with some useful Spanish phrases.

8. Thailand

Beautiful Krabi, Thailand. For friendly folk, enormous cheap fresh fish and among the world's best beaches, Thailand simply rocks. From the temples and tuk-tuks of Bankok, to the white beaches of Krabi and the surrounding islands, you're simply never going to forget a trip to Thailand.

There's something here to suit all budgets. Backpackers are very well catered for, as are flashpackers - travellers with a bit more cash to spend. Although the pound isn't faring against the Baht as well as it could, you're still likely to find that everything is great value - from the five-star hotels all the way down to the cheap market shopping.

Unfortunately at the time of writing, there is uncertainty concerning the political situation in Thailand. Before travelling there, it's recommended that you check out advice from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office's Thailand page.

9. Australia

The Pound has strengthened against the Australian Dollar, so - despite the initial large expense of a flight to the other side of the planet - British tourists should at least get good value while they're there. But they're assured to get good value in terms of sunshine, and things to see and do. Whether you're intending to explore the outback, find out about Aborigine culture, go surfing or sample the nightlife, Australia is sure not to disappoint.

British tourists need a visa to enter Australia, even for a short holiday... So don't leave home without one.

10. The UK

According to a survey in November last year, one in five Britons claim that going abroad for a holiday in 2009 is a luxury that they are unlikely to be able to afford*. But it's well worth bearing in mind that our very own isles are well worth exploring further. Plus you're unlikely to meet with any language barrier, or lose out due to fluctuations in exchange rate.

There are far too many great places in the UK to hope to list here. But just a handful of places that we love include Bath, York, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Pembrokeshire, and Monkey World in Dorset. Plus the number of diverse festivals in the UK has really blossomed over the last few years. Our favourites include Latitude in Suffolk, the Edinburgh Festival, Truck in Oxfordshire and Brecon Jazz Festival... But what type of festival you can attend is nowadays limited only by your imagination. Read our guide to festival survival to get you in the mood and for some handy tips.

Wat Sri Khom Kham of Thailand

Wat Sri Khom Kham is popular all around Thailand for its sitting Buddha image which is 17 meters tall and it has lap width of 14 meters. However, what really turns visitors' heads is the garden present within the compound of the temple. The sculpture garden gives a unique look.

Wat Sri Khom Kham is situated right at the shores of Phayao Lake in Muang district and it is said that the temple was founded after Lord Buddha, Himself, visited the site. The villagers of the area call the temple Phra Chao Ton Luang and hold a fair every year in the month of May.

Thailand Travel

Within the temple is a building known as Ho Thai Nithat. This building is where you can get to see all the antiques, local literature and the lifestyle of the people of the region, which is displayed using all the latest technology devices.

Wat Sri Khom Kham of Thailand

The sculpture garden is usually described as Heaven Hell Park. It is basically a collection of statues which portray heaven and hell. In Thailand, usually heaven and hell are portrayed through murals and painting. This is the only temple in the country where the sculpture garden is devoted to this theme. While the statues representing hell are quite monstrous, those representing heaven are serene and peaceful. But on the whole, the garden is a very peaceful place and one can just wander around or relax depending on what you feel like doing.

The temple is situated just one kilometer from the town and it takes just 15 minutes to get there on foot.

My Thailand Scooter Experience

Seeing Thailand on two wheels for me has to be one of the most exciting things to do with your clothes on! It's great when you get off the tourist trail, head into the countryside away from the hustle and bustle of the city and pass through small villages or deserted beaches.

Here are some handy tips and hints for hiring a scooter and how to avoid some pitfalls.

Thailand Travel

Scooters can be hired all over Thailand every man and his dog will have one to rent. Most tourist places especially in the big cities and around beach locations will have shops where you can hire; your hotel might even be able to rent them to you. For a 125 cc scooter such as the ubiquitous Honda Wave you can expect to pay anywhere from 150 baht to 300 for a 24 hour hire. For a week you will be looking at 1000 baht and around 3000 for a month. You will probably find a 50cc scooter not powerful enough if you are going anywhere where there are hills. A tank of fuel will cost you somewhere in the region of 90-120 baht. It's worth speaking to your hotel first even if they don't rent as they can give you great advise on reputable shops they normally send their customers to, what the going rate to rent is and how much petrol costs in the area.

My Thailand Scooter Experience

So you are in the shop about to hire, what can you expect? You may have to show a licence, but if you don't have one a bit of sweet talk will get you by, they really aren't that strict, you will see pre pubescent kids riding scooters in Thailand all the time! Be honest with yourself though if you have never ridden a scooter as its yours and other people's lives you might be messing with. You will probably be asked to leave your passport as a deposit, this is the norm and some people are reluctant to do this. You might be able to get away with them taking a photocopy if you tell them you need your passport to cash traveller's cheques. Alternatively you may be able to leave a cash deposit of say 2000 baht. You will most likely be asked to pay for the hire time when you return the scooter, so you could hold onto it for a couple of extra days if you wanted without having to pay a fee for returning it late. You will probably have to leave details of the address you are staying at too. Make sure you check over the scooter you are being offered, point out any damage and take photos of any damage in front of the owner (you don't want to be paying for someone else's damage when you return the bike). If bits are hanging off ask for another one. Ask the shop owner for the phone number of the shop in case you break down, so they can come out and help you. It's unlikely you will be able to take insurance out with the shop, or it won't be worth the paper it's written on, so it's worth looking at your travel insurance to see if you are covered to rent scooters and if so up to what cc. Should the worse happen and you are involved in an accident it's likely that you will pay any damage that needs fixing to the scooter to the shop owner or risk not seeing your passport again. If a third party is involved you may end up paying out damages there and then, cost wise this would be a fraction compared to the UK. It's unlikely it will ever get to court though unless you decided to peruse it with your travel insurance company if you are covered.

Before you get on, make sure you get a quick lesson from the owner and ask about any quirks of the model. Some scooters use a clutch whilst others are just twist and go. Find out the range of the tank as well and if there is a reserve tank light when does it come on? How many miles can you get from the reserve tank? I would also insist with the shop on hiring a helmet, which will most likely be the open face type. Wearing trainers is also a good idea; it's far too easy to stub a toe in flip flops!

It's worth watching the locals on the road before you start riding. See what they do at junctions, how they overtake, does the colour of traffic lights mean anything to them?! In busy areas the horn will undoubtedly be used frequently. It's also likely they won't be following the letter of the law like we do in the UK. They do however drive on the left like the UK.

If it is your first time on a scooter make sure you are in the right frame of mind. If your friends are doing it, you may feel pressurised, just go at your own pace it's not a race. Get them to wait for you now and then. It might sound obvious, but don't ever drink and ride, this happens far too much with tourists in Asia. Most are lucky and get away with a few scrapes, but it's just not worth the risk to you or others on the road.

If you are going to carry a pillion (passenger) make sure you instruct them on what to do. So you get on the scooter first, then when settled, your pillion will hop on, remind them to look out for the exhaust, it may be hot. Get them to hold on to the grab rail if the scooter has one, if not they may need to put their arms around your waist, tell them not to give you a bear hug though! If your pillion is inexperienced give them a signal for you to slow down if they get worried, maybe tapping their knees against your thighs. Also tell them not to move around too much when you are moving as this will upset the movement of the scooter. When it's time to stop, they get off first.

Things to look out for whilst on the road would be potholes, man hole covers, grates and even the odd dog in the middle of the road basking in the sun! Allot of the roads on the small islands aren't paved so just take it easy until you can feel how the scooter reacts to the loose surface, if you do find the scooter loosing traction, try to go with the flow to let the scooter stabilise itself and keep your hands loose on the bars, a death grip on the bars and sudden movements will destabilise the scooter even more. Also remember that where you are looking is where the scooter will go, so detach your eyes from that pothole and look to the side of it and in front of it. Looking far ahead also gives you more time to react to unexpected things and you don't get that 'ground rush' sensation that will make you feel less confident.

If you are going out for a whole day, make sure you fill up before you head out, get a map, be realistic as to how far you can go and find out where you can fill up on your way. It's also worth wearing sunglasses as a bee hitting your eye when you are doing 30mph is going to hurt! Carry a day sack too; a bottle of water, some sun cream, map and money can all go in it.

It may sound a bit scary to hire a scooter in Thailand, but with a bit of common sense, and hopefully taking on some of the tips I have given, you will have a great laugh, with many a tale to tell when you get home!

Golf Holidays Guide to Mauritius, Turkey and Thailand

The choice of new golfing destinations continues to expand around the world with new golf courses opening up regularly. I have been privileged to sample many of the world's most exotic golf holiday destinations including Mauritius, South Africa, Thailand, Seychelles, Turkey, Malaysia and Dubai. Below is a brief guide to 3 of these new golfing destinations.

Mauritius

Thailand Travel

For best value for golfers, I'd recommend the Belle Mare Plage which offers free green fees on its two 18-hole championship courses, the Legend and the Links. At Belle Mare Plage the Legend course offers a stern test, whilst not particularly long, the course is tricky and has a lot of water! The Links course is more forgiving but again a really top quality layout. Reduced green fees are available at the Le Touessrok Golf Course, which is 15 minutes away, this is a stunning course on a small paradise island, a 10 minute boat transfer is required to play on this truly unique course.

Golf Holidays Guide to Mauritius, Turkey and Thailand

Turkey

LykiaWorld is one of several good five star resorts that have blossomed in the Belek area of Southern Turkey in the last few years. These are served by low cost direct, daily flights to Antalya. Lykia Links Golf Antalya is a stunning golf complex on the shores of the Mediterranean. The 18-hole course set in the sand dunes by the sea was designed by celebrated golf architect Perry Dye (son of Pete Dye).

I've recently visited the resort and enjoyed the challenge.

Having played the course I'd endorse it very highly, whilst like most links courses it is reasonably challenging but at no time did I find it punitive. In true links fashion the course requires 'punch and run' shots. The quilted fairways have a sense of famous courses in Scotland and an assortment of pot bunkers guard the greens and require reasonably accurate placement on the fairways if you are to score well.

Buggies are available but the walk is not particularly arduous. The course has excellent practice facilities.

I thoroughly enjoyed the views of the sea and the surrounding mountain peaks as well as the daily call to prayer from a distant minaret. The course is definitely one you can enjoy day after day, I played it two days in a row and would happily have played it the following day but had to fly back to colder climes!

Thailand

Having visited Thailand recently I found the standard of the hotels has improved and the golf is better than ever. With its great climate, fantastic scenery and top class hotels, Thailand is a golfing destination with unparalleled variety. You can play a new course every day, with courses designed by the great players and golf architects such as Pete Dye, Peter Thomson, Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo.

Travelling Thailand - Chiang Rai Province - Rice Paddies, Rivers, Smiles and Mountains

I have been in Thailand now for two years working, and I also come over annually when working elsewhere.

I love the people, the culture and the food and now I'm beginning to see and understand a little more about this magnificent country.

Thailand Travel

For the Westerner there is much to see.

Travelling Thailand - Chiang Rai Province - Rice Paddies, Rivers, Smiles and Mountains

Even the capital is fun with its heat, exotic sights and sounds, and good-natured touts and street stalls.

The first experience is varied, but if tourist numbers are anything to go by then it will be Bangkok, Pattaya or Phuket.

Phuket lives up to its nickname - "Pearl of the Andaman."

Like a pearl it is highly polished, very expensive and has throngs of admirers bidding its value up. It also increases in price every year. Pearl indeed.

There are some nice beaches, but if you want an over-developed island there are plenty of other options.

Pattaya is a lot less expensive but no less developed.

Sin city on the beach is a magnet for men seeking instant relationships, cheap beer and daily, if not hourly thrills.

Funnily enough it is now trying to attract families. Strike two.

Great if you want to make love, not war but hardly an insight into Amazing Thailand.

Bangkok I would not argue with.

This mega-metropolis has wormed its way into my heart and remains my favourite capital.

The sights, sounds, tastes and buzz make it an exciting and pulse-quickening place to visit, and the value is undeniable.

I would suggest after heading to the capital for a week, to make your way North to the hills and cultural centre of the country.

Chiang Mai is the main centre of the North and is a little more laid back than the capital.

Industries and crafts include silk, lacquer and hill tribe products as well as Kings Project items which are quite exceptional.

Many years ago the hillpeople grew opium, and Thailand's revered King took an interest in their welfare and became patron of a project to teach these subjects how to grow sustainable crops for the benefit of the community.

This took off and now Chiang Mai has a plethora of agricultural products that grace the world's finest menus.

Because I am pretty much "Joe Street", I tend to focus on the immediate benefits to me. Coffee!

All over Thailand there are small street stands offering "Doi Chang" and "Doi tung" coffee which is an exceptional tasting bean made into a big cup of iced coffee for around 25 baht ()

Chiang Mai is the gateway to the North, and the people are gracefully Thai.

Unlike Phuket, there is a distinct lack of Tuk Tuk mafias, jetski scams, irritating and persistant Nepali tailor touts and in-your-face sex shows.

This city is your first major glimpse of real Thailand and is situated amongst rolling hills and majestic mountains.

Further North (actually VERY North at the top of the country) is Chiang Rai, a very Thai town situated in the Golden Triangle - a tri border city sitting on the junction of Laos, Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand.

This is the home to the mighty Mekong - a river that winds its sullen silty way 4350 kilometers through Nepal, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. The river, in turn, is home to the giant catfish and a swarm of boat travel options that allow you to explore the incomparable sights of real Asia.

In this city you will find other foreigners, sure.

Don't expect that you will be the first to grace their pavements.

The difference is in the welcome, appreciation and openness that you will find over the m,ore jaded and tourist oriented centers.

If you need sex for money, excitement and designer shopping, stay in the capital or one of the overdeveloped resorts.

This is a place to unwind, exercise the camera, and take home some lifetime memories of a hauntingly beautiful place and its people.

I would recommend driving.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! YES. Driving in Asia.

Chiang mai is a great place to rent a small four wheel dive and then you can head North through the green mountains and bamboo forests at a slow pace, taking the time to explore some hill villages, Royal projects and street side vendors on the way.

A favourite of mine is a wee 'blink-and-you-miss-it' market called "Bong Nam Lon" or 'hot spring'.

As it's name would suggest, this is a small boiling water creek where impassive vendors sell small wire baskets of quail eggs that you can cook in the spring and then eat.

Also lots of hand crafts and hand made clothing from the hill tribes made from hemp fibre and natural cotton and colours. Of course coffee is there, and a great wee bar with character and cold beer.

Refreshed it's time to head for Chiang Rai itself.

This city has some majestic "wats' or Thai temples, but first you'll need to drive past a never-ending vista of rice paddies set in the flat areas between the hills.

You will recognise these because of their colour - the most vibrant and intense green that you will see on this planet. Just awe inspiring.

This is real Northern Thailand and the staple changes from boring old steamed rice to "Sticky rice' which is pulled out of a woven basket and eaten in lumps or balls with the amazingly fresh food that the area is renowned for.

I write a lot about the weird and wonderful adventure foods from here - Insects, frogs, snakes, lily pods, beetles, grubs and wild pork - but the truth is that the less adventurous eater is also well catered for.

The road stalls offer a variety of noodle dishes, charcoal barbecued chicken and local vegetables and I would also recommend a trip into any of the big supermarkets to see the incredible fruits from this fertile region.

Once you have your confidence levels up, take a drive out of the cities and explore the sights and smiles you will find in the smaller 'baans' or villages - it is safe and you will be welcome.

This is a far cry from the money-hungry tourist Meccas of Thailand.

This is real Thailand, and you won't experience the double pricing and rip-offs that pollute Phuket and Pattaya.

The price of everything is low, and you will get the right change down to the last baht or satang.

In case you want to cut a couple of days off your trip, Chiang Rai also has an airport.

I am a frequent traveller.

I discovered last week that Chiang Rai airport is the only airport that I have ever been to that doesn't try to rip off tourists.

The airport shops offer lots of authentic hand made hill village clothing and hand crafts at local prices and an impressive array of snacks, both international and local.

I bought a couple of excellent quality shirts which were made from lotus (lily) fibre - supporting the local economy and definitely of the quality to be sold for - 0 each back in my own country.

I paid 200 baht, or around each. Hand made, Natural fibre, excellent cut. at the airport shop,

In Bangkok you will be asked for 250 baht for a cheap Chinese shirt made from polyester cotton.

This city is also the jumping off point for excursions into Laos and Burma, and "next door" is Isaan - the poor North-eastern province famous for it's food and friendly people.

The great thing about Thailand is the Thai people. Experience them at their best in the far North.

Do yourself a favour and see the real Thailand first off. It took me years and many visits to find the part of Thailand that sees you as a person and not as a cash cow. Why make the same mistake as the hundreds of thousands of others who visit the glitzy tourist centres?

Questions are welcome - just visit me at my website and leave your queries in my comments section.

I hope to see you in North Thailand.

Australia Rail Travel

Australia rail travel is affordable, convenient and very satisfying. This whole can be seen and explored by rail. This article takes you through some of the more popular Australian train travel experiences.

The Ghan

Thailand Travel

The most famous of all rail services in Australia The Ghan is a funny name but it is certainly cemented in Australian culture with the service being in operation for over 80 years! This service will take from Adelaide through to Alice Springs then onto Darwin. The accommodation on board matches any luxurious hotel although there are economy styles as well. It takes 2 nights in either direction and covers some of Australia most iconic areas such as the desolate Nullarbor Desert.

Australia Rail Travel

The Indian Pacific

Getting it's name from the two oceans on either side of Australia the Indian Pacific will take you from Sydney to Perth or vice versa taking in Adelaide. Covering famous towns such as Broken Hill and Kalgoorlie. This is the world's longest straight stretch of railway and your journey from one side of the country to the other will take 3 nights.

The Overland

Take the Overland to go from Melbourne to Adelaide or vice versa. You have the opportunity to hop off at various towns such as Geelong to explore and the great thing about this service is that it is a daylight service so it will get you to either Melbourne to Adelaide within the day in a very relaxed and comfortable way.

The Southern Spirit

Now this is my kind of rail service. There are two rail services available: the Coastal Tour which will take you from Brisbane to Uluru or the Grand Tour which is the just the Coastal Tour going the other way. Made up of 13 nights and 14 days the train takes you off the beaten track so to speak for some off train excursions including famous towns such as Coober Pedy known widely for being opal country and then there is the wine country of the Hunter Valley. The Southern Spirit books out quickly and early so give yourself plenty of time to research the trip.

The Spirit of the Outback

Brisbane to Longreach. Take the Spirit of the Outback to explore Queensland's outback country. This is a world away from the cities of Australia, a different way of life where the sun is hotter and the days are longer. Many say it is the real Australia and it is hard to argue with that. The Spirit of the Outback will take you to towns such as Emerald, Barcaldine and onto Longreach where Qantas was founded and also where the famous Stockmans Hall of Fame is located.

Australia Rail Passes

There are quite a few ways to save money when planning your Australia rail holiday. Consider the AusRail pass which is unlimited rail travel for 6 months using the Traveltrain, Countrylink or Great Southern Rail services. This is the complete rail pass to see most of Australia.

The Backtracker rail Pass is the pass to see East Coast Australia taking in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra using the XPT (Countrylink) services. Valid for 14 days or 1,3 or 6 months the pass also includes at least AUD of City rail fares which means you can travel to the Blue Mountains or the famous Bondi Beach.

The East Coast pass is one way travel for 6 months along East Coast Australia.

The ultimate pass for Australia Rail travel is the Rail Explorer Pass/Great Southern Railway Pass. This will let you travel The Ghan, The Indian Pacific and The Overland in any direction for 6 months. See Uluru, Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Darwin and many other famous Australian destinations, all for less than 0AUD.

And finally there is the Queensland Explorer Pass which allows you to see the whole of Queensland on unlimited travel for 3 or 6 months. Visit Cairns and Kuranda or outback destinations such as Longreach or Mount Isa. A 3 month pass will be less than 0AUD and a 6 month pass will be less than 0AUD.

So there we have it. A complete guide to rail travel in Australia. This is a big country and I have found that one of the best ways to see it comfortably is by rail. There are lots of services available as you've seen so why not include rail on your holiday for easy hassle free traveling.

Songkran 2011

Lots of festivities and feast in Thailand are beyond doubt remarkable one. One of the most awaited festivities in Thailand is the Songkran Festival. Thai people, travelers and tourists are looking forward for this event especially the Songkran 2011. This celebration falls from the 13th to 15th day of April. What to expect during this event? Well, if you love water during the hottest days in Thailand you this festivity is surely right for you! It is the biggest Water Fight in Thailand wherein you'll certainly get soaked in water the moment you put your foot outside your doorstep.

Seeing everyone handling their bucket of water and water gun, while shouting out loud "Sawadee Pi Mai" meaning Happy New Year, you'll be amazed on how Thai people express their happiness in this special occasion. Songkran Festival is the longest holiday that is why most of the travelers and vacationers set their holidays on this day to ensure that they will be a part of this once a year event. For people in Thailand, water is the main thing for cleansing purposes for them to wash away all the evil doings that they've done from the past. It is also one way of removing bad fortune for the years ahead.

Thailand Travel

Songkran Festival is not merely on the water throwing, though for some people especially for the vacationers it is the main highlights of the festivity. The real essence of this festivity aside from cleansing them and washing away bad luck, traditionalists take this opportunity to give respect to their ancestors, elders' neighbors and friends. During this time they also have a monastery visit to feed the monks and offer prayers to revered Buddha.

Songkran 2011

Songkran 2011 is one major event to look forward to. It is not just for fun but it is also a circumstance to do well and show respect to the people around you.
